On January 28, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search warrant in Georgia’s Fulton County to investigate records relating to the 2020 election. The warrant was specifically executed in the main election facility in Union City.
FBI agents loaded boxes from the county elections hub warehouse that, according to spokesperson Jenna Sellitto, contain ballots. The FBI also seeks tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images, and voter rolls.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and the FBI’s deputy director, Andrew Bailey, were present for the raid. Gabbard’s presence in particular has sparked concerns regarding the Trump administration’s intentions behind the raid. Gabbard has indulged in conspiracy theories. She lied that the Obama administration committed treason by concocting the idea that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) vaguely stated that Gabbard was present to identify “vulnerabilities in our critical infrastructure and protecting against exploitation.”
Last week, Trump warned of prosecutions against those who, as he claims without evidence, stole the 2020 Presidential election from him. Last month, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sued the clerk of the Fulton County superior and magistrate courts to gain access to Fulton County’s 2020 election documents. In July 2025, the right-wing State Election Board aided the DOJ in this effort by passing a resolution that requests Attorney General Pam Bondi to access voting documents. The DOJ has sought to exploit the Civil Rights Act to follow through on a second October subpoena by the State Election Board. The aforementioned clerk, Che Alexander, refused to comply.
Trump’s obsession with his loss of Georgia in the 2020 election has persisted. In a call with Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, he erroneously claimed that he had won every state, and that 5,000 dead people voted in Georgia. In fact, it was Trump and several of his allies that were indicted by the state of Georgia for attempting to steal the election there.
This raid occurred in the midst of DOJ efforts to gain access to non-public state voter roll information. It has sued Minnesota and 23 other states to gain access to that information.
