On June 15, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that himself and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, were under investigation. The investigation started on an unknown date, but has been ongoing for about a year.
According to Newsom, federal agents questioned friends of his family and former employees, as well as organizations with ties to him, demanding records and “random documents.” The investigation is being spearheaded by the Eastern District of California. As of the time of this writing, it is unknown what specifically Newsom is being investigated for. A source for NBC vaguely stated that his wife was being investigated for her “taxes,” and another source for CNN stated that the investigation stems from a whistleblower report about a year ago. Regardless, there is no known public evidence that Newsom and his wife had committed a crime.
Newsom was adamant regarding his innocence.
“If he can’t intimidate me, he’ll go after the mother of our children,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide.”

The political context of this is clear to even a casual observer of politics. Newsom has criticized and mocked Trump on social media, and was one of the few governors to directly retaliate against the gerrymandering of Texas, which was kicked into motion by Trump, by redistricting California mid-cycle. These facts, and the strong likelihood that Newsom is running for President in 2028, have made Gavin Newsom one of Trump’s most prominent political opponents.
