In a press release, the Social Security Administration addressed claims by Elon Musk that the Dept. of Government Efficiency (DOGE) found “millions of dead people” receiving payouts. The agency clarified that, yes, over three million deaths are reported to the agency each year, but benefits are terminated the same day a death is reported.
The agency also responded to speculation that living Social Security recipients are prematurely being marked as deceased.

A recent audit of Social Security payments did uncover fraud between 2015 and 2022. But considering the large number of legitimate recipients & total amount of funds dispersed, the level of fraud overall has been found to be negligible. The vast majority of the so-called fraud cases are simply mistakes resulting in overpayments, most of which are subsequently identified and clawed back.

There are some crazy rumors floating around out there. The claim that dead people on a wide scale receive Social Security payments has been largely debunked, while stories on the number of recipients exceeding the total U.S. population is flat-out a false conspiracy theory. The internal audits and experts who monitor the agency confirm the level of fraud is minuscule, with Social Security being among the most scrutinized and accountable agency throughout the entire federal government.
Statements coming out of the White House bashing the Social Security program have left many Americans concerned and even fearful the administration will use such claims to justify reducing the funding. President Trump has claimed without citing evidence that his DOGE team was “identifying shocking levels of incompetence & probable fraud” at the agency, while chief DOGE architect Elon Musk has incorrectly charged immense waste has been discovered while even referring to the program as a “Ponzi scheme.”
The math does indicate Social Security is headed for insolvency at its current pace, but being famously coined the “third rail of politics,” federal politicians know full well they’re certain to get burned by trying to make significant cuts to the benefits. Almost all politicians are loathe to commit political suicide. It’s far more likely various steps will be taken to shore up the program financially in avoiding the wrath of Americans who’ve paid into the program their entire working lives.
Tough decisions and shared sacrifice will ultimately be required to sustain the program. Such measures as raising or eliminating the cap on Social Security taxation in this era of disparate wage/wealth gaps, while incrementally increasing the full retirement age on younger generations with the anticipation life expectancies will start increasing again, along with a slight increase in the payroll tax rate, are all expected to be part of the mix. Eliminating what little fraud exists won’t do much. But before our country reaches the point of failing to meet our obligations, our DC leadership will be forced to prescribe bitter medicine for us in order to achieve a top priority: saving Social Security for our seniors.
