George Orwell’s 1984 wasn’t supposed to be an instruction manual. Yet here we are, with the Trump administration actively watching progressive organizations.
Yesterday, a friend at a progressive organization informed us that the Trump administration’s DEI reporting email address (DEIATruth @ opm . gov) had subscribed to their email list. We pushed out a message to other anti-Trump groups through social media, warning them to keep an eye out.
Today, they signed up for Trump File email updates and used the White House’s public comments line as their contact number. Trump File and every other group the “DEIA Truth” address has subscribed to is on a private government watch list.
This is surveillance of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights, specifically targeted for standing up for democracy and resisting Trump and the “America First” regime.
The DEIA Truth email address was created by the Project 2025 agents who took over Trump’s Office of Personnel Management (OPM). They are using it to scare federal workers into reporting their colleagues who support diversity programs or are part of teams with that purpose. Now we know it’s also being weaponized to track and monitor anti-Trump organizations.
Just like Orwell’s “Big Brother” thought police, MAGA is creating an atmosphere of fear and suspicion. They want to know who supports equality, who believes in diversity, and who dares to work against their authoritarian vision for America.
Authoritarianism spreads — through surveillance, through fear, and through turning citizens against each other.
This is what happens in the early days of an autocracy. Small steps toward total control. Monitoring of dissent. Creation of enemies lists. We’ve seen this playbook before.
We’re alerting progressive organizations nationwide to check their subscriber lists regularly for this address and any other .gov addresses. Depending on your email platform, you should be able to archive or at least remove the contact so they don’t receive your emails.
