Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained U.S. citizens, including at least one veteran. The event took place in Newark, New Jersey. According to the mayor, agents raided a local business and made arrests without a warrant.
This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees ‘the right of the people be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures….’ Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized.
Mayor Ras Baraka
We have filed this under Illegal Activity as what took place in Newark is indeed unconstitutional.
Updated 1/25/2025: A previous version of this post claimed this might have been the first time in modern U.S. history that we had a documented case of a U.S. citizen being detained by ICE. This is not the case.
In 2019, ICE detained and held an 18-year-old American for three weeks. Thousands of U.S. citizens have been detained and even deported by ICE in the last couple decades, including one who was held for over three years.
