On July 11, Attorney General Pam Bondi fired about twenty lawyers, support staff, and United States Marshals who worked for former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation regarding Trump’s theft of classified documents and attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.
This brings the total of number of fired employees who worked for Jack Smith to 37, on top of firings on January 27. Axios has reported that fifteen more could face termination.
The firings were overtly political in two ways. They were delayed due to the MAGA civil war that started when the Trump administration refused to release the Epstein files. Secondly:
The staffers were identified in an internal investigation by Bondi’s “Weaponization Working Group,” which she established shortly after taking office as part of an effort to purge entrenched political enemies of Trump.
Axios
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche also delayed the firings to ensure that only those disloyal to Trump were fired.
There is no legal requirement for Department of Justice employees to be personally loyal to the President, and there is no evidence that these terminated workers “weaponized” the department against Trump.
