On an unknown date, the Pentagon’s independent watchdog uncovered evidence that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth sent messages on Signal with information that originated from a classified email with the label “SECRET/NOFORN.”
The inspector general investigation was requested in April by bipartisan members of Congress, and first known to the public on June 7.
The email from which Hegseth based his Signal message on, in violation of protocol, was originally written by General Michael “Erik” Kurilla. The “SECRET” classification associated with the email means that any unauthorized releasing of the information in it could jeopardize national security. As the label suggests, “NOFORN” means that foreign nationals are not to have access to it, including officials from America’s closest allies.
The classified information included details of the upcoming strike against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The timing of the attack and weapons used were unwittingly leaked by Hegseth.
What this evidence proves is that the White House was engaged in a coverup of Hegseth’s reckless behavior that endangered American troops and national security interests. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, and White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly specifically defended Hegseth, or erroneously claimed that no classified information was shared on Signal.
Whether or not Hegseth will suffer consequences resulting from the inspector general inquiry remains to be seen.
