On July 23, the Justice Department announced that it had launched a “Strike Force” to explore legal action it could take based on Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s false claim that former President Obama manufactured politicized evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to prevent Trump from becoming President.
“The Department of Justice is proud to work with my friend Director Gabbard and we are grateful for her partnership in delivering accountability for the American people. We will investigate these troubling disclosures fully and leave no stone unturned to deliver justice,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.

Bondi made this statement despite the fact that the disclosures were not troubling, with regard to domestic political interference. The files released by Gabbard feature Obama-era intelligence officials agreeing that Russia’s ability to directly influence vote shares and damage electoral infrastructure was minimal. Contrary to another one of Gabbard’s false claims, this finding does not contradict the Intelligence Community Assessment that Russia sought to sway the 2016 presidential campaign in Trump’s favor.
These developments come as Trump and his administration have sought to change the national discussion, which has centered around the Epstein files and a potential coverup of them by the White House.
