The Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Honduras and Nicaragua, revoking the legal status of over 72,000 Hondurans and 4,000 Nicaraguans.
In a memo, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined both Honduras and Nicaragua no longer continue to meet the conditions for TPS. The moves by the DHS are set to go into effect in early September, stripping over 76,000 migrants of legal status if they do not transition to another legal status.
This decision brings the total number of migrants losing their protected legal status to around 600,000, with 10,000 Afghanis losing legal status and over 530,000 migrants from other Latin American countries.
In 2019, the Trump administration attempted to end TPS for Honduras and Nicaragua, however, due to court orders and litigation, the termination never took effect.
