Donald Trump has issued an executive order that places a $100K fee on applications for H-1B visas, supposedly in an attempt to prevent overuse of the system. “We need great workers, and this pretty much ensures that that’s what’s going to happen.”
H-1B visas are work visas that last three years, with the option to get a three year extension. Around 65,000 are granted per year, with another 20,000 reserved for people with advanced degrees from US higher education institutions.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters that the price was decided on after talks with companies, and that they’re unsure “whether we’re going to charge the $300,000 up front or $100,000 a year for the three years.”
