Trump revokes legal status of over half a million humanitarian parole seekers

Donald Trump confirmed he is revoking the legal status of over half a million Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans.

The individuals entered the country legally through the process for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, which allowed people from the four respective countries – who are each going through humanitarian crisis – to temporarily come into the U.S. to work legally through a US-backed sponsor.

The DHS stated in a public statement that the termination of CHNV humanitarian parole is consistent with the executive order signed by Trump on January 20, named “Securing Our Borders.” The order directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to end “all categorical parole programs.”

Now, the 530,000 Latin Americans must self deport or risk deportation.

Earlier this week, on March 18, Donald Trump stated in a video he made for social media platforms that people can self deport “the easy way” or “they can get deported the hard way.” In the video, Trump announced that migrants can self-deport using the CBP Home app, a new app the administration created in an effort to increase self-deportations. Trump states that individuals who refuse to self deport “will be found, they will be deported, and they will never be admitted to the United States ever, ever again.”

This comes a month after DHS stated that they will be re-designating the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, effectively removing the protected status for 500,000 Haitians.

International human rights organization Human Rights First and US-based Justice Action Center are representing beneficiaries, sponsors, and the Haitian Bridge Alliance in a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the termination of CHNV humanitarian parole.
