A federal judge concludes that Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf is illegally serving as the top official at DHS.
As part of the decision, Wolf’s suspension of DACA protections is reversed. The suspension allowed the Trump administration to deport children who were brought to the U.S. illegally before they turned sixteen.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that the Trump administration wrongly tried to shut down protections under the Obama-era legislation known as DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. On July 28, Wolf nonetheless suspended DACA pending review.

The Government Accountability Office wrote in August that Wolf’s role at DHS invalidated U.S. law that dictates the agency’s order of succession.
