Three days after Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, killing him, Chauvin agreed to a plea deal. He would spend more than 10 years in a federal prison. The deal could ease tensions as Black Lives Matter protests and related riots swept the nation. With Chauvin behind bars, the government might appear to care about police brutality.

William Barr blocks the plea deal.

According to law enforcement officials involved in the case, Barr claims the plea deal is too weak and will breed even more unrest.

However, Barr doesn’t care about increasing protests and riots when he pushes D.C. to charge protesters without evidence of lawbreaking or when he wants protesters charged with conspiracy to overthrow the government.
