On March 6, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced “a 30-day waiver for India to buy Russian oil already at sea without retaliation from Washington.”
This is despite Moscow providing intelligence on the location of American troops and assets amid the war in Iran. The alleviation of these sanctions demonstrates that Trump is more concerned with avoiding losses in the midterm elections as a result of high oil prices, than he is about winning the very war that he started, as well as America’s national security.
Putin publicly announced that he would take advantage of higher oil and gas prices that resulted from the Iran War. Even then, Trump may be unable to save him, due to the high value of the ruble, and the fact that Putin was forced to sell energy to India and China at steeply discounted prices. This does give him some time as Russia’s war effort against Ukraine and general economic outlook falters, however.
If this measure was taken to provide “aid and comfort” to Iran or Russia, this policy may amount to treason:
Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
