On January 7, amid a protest against United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minneapolis, an ICE agent shot Renee Nicole Good, a 37 year old woman, in the head, killing her.
During about 11 a.m., some among a crowd of protesters threw snowballs at the ICE agents, who responded with pepper balls or some other type of chemical irritant. A white truck utilized by ICE was blocked by the protesters.
Thirty minutes later, a woman entered a red vehicle located near the ICE agents. ICE agents surrounded the passenger’s and driver’s side of the vehicle. Her vehicle was blocking the road being used by ICE. According to witnesses, one of the agents proceeded to step back and shoot the woman three times. A man who identified himself as a physician, with hands raised up, offered to check Good’s pulse, but was prohibited from doing so by the ICE officers. Contrary to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) recollection of what happened, the vehicle was not heading toward the ICE agents.
“One of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” the statement reads. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers.”

The witness and video evidence directly contradict this claim. While the vehicle did pull forward after backing up, the car was clearly going to the side of the ICE agent in front of it; there was no intent to ram him. There is also no evidence that the slain person was engaged in rioting. The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have also disputed the DHS’s version of events.
Frey has demanded for ICE to leave Minneapolis, and accused them of causing chaos in the city. Walz has called for “a full, fair, and expeditious investigation” to be carried out on the state-level.
Renee Good was identified as the slain victim by her mother, Donna Ganger. Ganger noted that Good was not part of any protest movement. Commenting on the incident, Trump, without evidence, claimed that it was inflamed by the “Radical Left.” Good’s Instagram account appears to be apolitical. In it, Good described herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom and shitty guitar strummer from Colorado; experiencing Minneapolis, MN.”
Trump expressed incredulity at the fact that the ICE agent next to the car was alive. He went on to say that he was recovering in the hospital, although no ICE agent was visibly harmed in the video. Even in the video of the incident that Trump shared, which offers a view from a different angle, the car steers away from the ICE officer.
Despite Trump’s claim that ICE would target illegal immigrants with a criminal background, a law-abiding United States citizen has been killed by them. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, Good was not the subject of any law enforcement activity or investigation.
