Roy Cohn stars in Joseph McCarthy’s investigation, invents McCarthyism

On January 2, Roy Cohn is added as chief counsel for Senator Joseph R. McCarthy’s investigating subcommittee. He is referred for the position by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who befriended Cohn because of his performance in the Rosenberg trial.

Cohn quickly becomes the mascot of the investigations as he brutally accuses and interrogates government employees he suspects are Communists. Only three weeks pass between Cohn being added to the committee and Cohn threatening government officials.

Cohn is often referred to as the architect of McCarthyism for his purging of federal employees based on unsupported claims. In some cases, suspects were even accused of being atheist as evidence that they supported communism.

According to Wikipedia, McCarthyism is used today to refer to “aggressively questioning a person’s patriotism, making poorly supported accusations, using accusations of disloyalty to pressure a person to adhere to conformist politics or to discredit an opponent, subverting civil and political rights in the name of national security, and the use of demagoguery.”

Roy Cohn famously prosecutes Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, gets death penalty

Roy Cohn, the original Donald Trump, is born in New York

On March 6, the trial of Julias and Ethel Rosenberg for espionage and being members of the Communist Party begins. Overseeing the prosecution is Assistant U.S. Attorney Irving Saypol and his new star protégé, Roy Cohn.

During the trial, nationwide protests against the government’s paranoid manhunt for alleged Communists grew larger than ever, with Julias and Ethel becoming the faces of the resistance.

Not long after the trial starts, evidence emerges that the Rosenbergs are not guilty after all. Despite the evidence and the protests, on March 29, the Rosenbergs are convicted of espionage. On April 5, they are given the death sentence.

David Greenglass, whose testimony was used to arrest and convict the Rosenbergs, admitted after the trial that Roy Cohn encouraged him to lie in his testimony if he wanted to protect himself and his wife.

The case made Roy Cohn a media star.

Fred Trump completes Beach Haven with mob help, makes his kids landlords

Sometime in 1950, Fred Trump completes the Beach Haven apartment complexes with $16 million in Federal Housing Administration (FHA) funds. From the FHA aid for Beach Haven and Shore Haven, Trump and his business partner schemed the government out of at least $3.5 million that went into their own pockets.

When he got the green light for another development — Beach Haven, a forty-acre, twenty-three-building complex in Coney Island that would net him $16 million in FHA funding — it was clear that his strategy of building on the taxpayer’s dime was a winner.

Mary L. Trump, Too Much and Never Enough

His partner on Beach Haven is William “Willie” Tomasello, whose mob ties include earlier real estate projects with members of the Gambino and Genovese crime families in New York and Florida.

Before building the apartments, Trump bought the land and gave it to a trust. He made his five kids, including three-year-old Donald Trump, beneficiaries of that trust. Since Beach Haven is built on the land, the building has to pay a ground lease to the trust, i.e. the Trump kids. Fred arranged a 99-year lease in which the Beach Haven building has to pay his kids $60,600 every year.

In effect, he made his children into landlords… The maneuver created a steady stream of income for the Trump children for their entire lives. Fred Trump later set up similar ground leases at the nearby Shore Haven apartments. The lease continued until the properties were sold 55 years later, paying Donald Trump the equivalent today of more than $4.8 million.

Beach Haven becomes home to numerous Russian and Ukrainian immigrants.

Note: The publicly available information on James and Willie Tomasello confirm their mob ties, but Trump File is not 100% confident in the elder Tomasello’s relationship with Fred Trump. The relationship between Fred and Willie is better documented.

UPDATED 2/3/2025: A previous version of this post claimed based on our sources (linked below) that Fred Trump had previously worked with Vincent “James” Tomasello, the father of Willie Tomasello. A family member reached out to Trump File to clarify that James died in 1937 and had no connection to the Trump family.

All of the informatin about William Vincent Tomasello is factual, but as for grandpa he did brick and stone work for the Diocese of Brooklyn under the company name James Vincent Tomasello Mason Contractors (JVT). He started the business about 1910 with his three brothers. They also made their money building and selling small apartment buildings on Kings highway and Ocean Parkway. Look up the Deeds of Record in the Brooklyn archives.

The UK’s Foreign Office investigates Robert Maxwell & Russia

Shortly after the end of World War II in September 1945, Robert Maxwell (born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch) was transferred from the British Army to the Berlin headquarters of the UK’s Foreign Office (FO). It’s not long before the FO suspects there is a problem with him and launches an investigation (exact date unknown).

Reports of Maxwell’s suspicious activity and ties to foreign intelligence agencies begin hitting the FO’s covert Information Research Department (IRD) by the end of 1949, if not years earlier. At the time of this writing, there is not a clear timeline of the investigations, which the department files under “Captain Ian Maxwell.”

The files describe Maxwell as “a thoroughly bad character and almost certainly financed by Russia.”

After the former Mirror newspapers chief and ex-Labour MP died at sea on November 5 1991, there was widespread speculation that he might have been a double or even a triple agent…

Correspondence between various members of the IRD reveal that the Czech-born Maxwell had been considered to be a suspicious figure directly after the Second World War, when Maxwell, then a lieutenant in the British Army, was working for the British Control Commission in Berlin – an allied administrative body.

Digby Ackland, of the IRD, wrote in a 1959 report that “Capt Maxwell’s questionable activities have been brought to the notice of the Foreign Office on several occasions over the past 10 years”.

Backstory

Maxwell, father of Ghislaine Maxwell, joined the Czechoslovak Army on May 13, 1940, and was transferred to the British Army three years later after protesting against Czech military leadership. By 1946, he was serving in the press department in the Berlin headquarters of the UK’s Foreign Office.

At some point in the ’40s, Maxwell became friendly with the Land of Israel, Czechoslovak communist leaders, and very likely Soviet Russia. Maxwell’s friends at the Foreign Office began investigating him around 1946.

In late 1947 or early 1948, he covertly smuggled aircraft parts into Israel, giving them a leg up in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1947-1949 War of Independence.

Israel’s sudden air superiority played a major role in Czechoslovakia’s decision to provide them with weapons, jets, and other military aid in Operation Balak. Officials later say that the war might have been impossible without Czechoslovakia’s help — and therefore, Robert Maxwell’s help.

Russia publicly announced its support for the partition of Palestine and the creation of Israel in May 1947, but Stalin was quietly supporting Israel’s efforts as early as 1944. He believed that the new country would improve his efforts to diminish Britain’s influence in the Middle East.

By the time of his death, Robert Maxwell is known to have worked for he Czechoslovak Army, the British Army, the British Foreign Office, and the Semion Mogilevich Organization; he’s also believed to have worked for the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), Israel’s Mossad, and likely the KGB.

After his death, he is buried in Israel. Six Israeli intelligence leaders and Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir attend his funeral. Shamir eulogizes Maxwell and compares him to a hero. Maxwell, Shamir says, “has done more for Israel than can today be told.”

Without the arms from Czechoslovakia… it is very doubtful whether we would have been able to conduct the war.

It is possible that without Maxwell, Israel would not exist today.

Semion Mogilevich, the ‘boss of bosses,’ is born in Ukraine

On June 30, 1946, Semion Mogilevich is born in Kiev, Ukraine. He will grow up to be the primary money launderer for Moscow “super-gang” Solntsevskaya Bratva before forming his own transnational crime ring in 1994 that becomes so powerful that mafia states will refer to him as “the boss of bosses.”

In the early 1990s, the FBI catches a whiff of Mogilevich after he participates in a stock manipulation scheme to fraud thousands of American investors out of $150 million. After a trip to Moscow, FBI Director William Sessions warns the world that Mogilevich is a threat to global stability.

In 1998, the FBI releases a report that Mogilevich operates a criminal enterprise with about 250 members embedded in international banks, stock exchanges, politics, government, and major industries. The report also reveals that his international crime business includes money laundering, arms dealing, trading nuclear material, prostitution, drug trafficking, and oil deals.

Also in 1998, an American newspaper obtains hundreds of previously-classified FBI and Israeli intelligence records that identify Mogilevich as the leader of the Red Mafia, an infamous Russian mob family based in Budapest but whose members hold high positions in New York, Pennsylvania, and Southern California.

He has contract killers on his payroll throughout the United States and Europe. According to one of his associates, Monya Elson, Mogilevich has more power and control than then-president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin.

He has created a global communications network through secure satellite telephones, cellular clone phones, encrypted fax machines, email systems, and state-of-the-art computers, all of which are conducted by a host of Ph.D.’s he employs.

Robert I. Friedman

In 2009, the FBI adds Mogilevich to their Ten Most Wanted list, along with a statement about his various criminal enterprises including his proven ability to influence entire governments and economies.

In 2011, FBI Director Robert Mueller gives a speech alerting the nation that Mogilevich’s crime ring has already infiltrated New York businesses and industries, and he warns that Mogilevich is our biggest threat to national security.

By 2014, he controls over 100 companies in 27 countries operating as fronts for his crime syndicate.

In 2016, one of his associates and fellow money launderer, Donald J. Trump, becomes president of the United States of America.

Donald Trump is born

Donald Trump is sent to New York Military Academy

On June 14, Donald John Trump is born, the fourth child of Fred and Mary.

Trump grows up in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens and attends Kew-Forest School, a private school for K-12 students. His siblings are also enrolled at the school, with anywhere between 100 and 300 other students.

At Kew-Forest, Trump becomes friends with Peter Brant. Brant grows up to become an industrialist, magazine publisher, and film producer.

For unknown reasons, most of the content on the school’s Wikipedia page is deleted between March and April 2021.

Fred Trump gets $10 million FHA government funding for Shore Haven

On January 12, Fred Trump purchases property to build Beach Haven apartments for Navy personnel in Virginia Beach and was overcompensated with loans from the Federal Housing Administration. Fred Trump and his partner received at least $3.5 million more from the FHA than the cost to build his first two apartment complexes (Shore Haven and Beach Haven).

It was later found out that the FHA gave Fred Trump $10.4 million in funds for Shore Haven, his first FHA-backed apartment complex, but the money was divided amongst three separate land purchases as a loophole. There was a $5 million limit on government project financing.

The FHA was created in 1934 to ensure affordable housing for the growing population but changed course after World War II to enrich already successful builders.

Fred Trump begins inserting himself into political circles and making powerful friends

Beginning in the late 1930s and continuing throughout the ’40s, Fred Trump introduces himself to political movers and shakers.

One of his first influential connections is a man named Thomas Grace. Grace is an attorney and Democratic Party operative. At the time of their meeting, he’s also the New York state director of the Federal Housing Administration.

Impressed by the young man and his plans—and by Trump’s expanding network of political friends—Grace authorized $750,000 in mortgage insurance for the circus-ground venture, enabling Trump to take out the huge construction loans necessary to erect the 450 homes.

Lithub.com

Over the next three years, the FHA helps Trump purchase and build on empty land previously used by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

In the 1940s, Fred Trump joins exclusive beach clubs, country clubs, and other elite social venues to rub elbows with more leaders of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, the New York political machine, and the federal government. His efforts earn him influence in New York politics and open the door to even more FHA funding.

But as you’ll read in future posts, a lot of the funding doesn’t make it into real estate; it lands in Trump’s own pockets.

By the time the clubhouse hack [Mayor Abraham] Beame arrived in City Hall in 1974 after the reform mayoralty of John Lindsay, Fred Trump had known him for 30 years. The new mayor immediately gave both Trumps a license to steal by declaring that “whatever Donald and Fred want, they have my complete backing.”

Fred Trump and KKK members arrested in brawl with police

About 1,000 members and associates of the KKK stage a violent “free-for-all” against a hundred law enforcement officers during a rally in Queens. 21-year-old Fred Trump is in the crowd, and he’s not with the police.

Trump and six other men, all in klansmen robes, are arrested during or after the rally, which was advertised as a response to Protestant Americans being attacked by the Roman Catholic police.

Trump manages to escape charges. This leads some to speculate that, despite the reports of all seven men wearing robes, Trump might have been a spectator and not a actually involved in the rally or fight.

It’s also possible Trump paid his way out of trouble. His father, Frederick, left his mother Elizabeth and him considerable wealth when he passed in 1918. Just a month before the protest, the mother-son duo registered their joint company, E. Trump & Son. The company is later renamed The Trump Organization.

In future years, Donald Trump claims that his father was never involved with the KKK, was never arrested at the march, and never lived at the Devonshire Road address belonging to the “Fred Trump” that was arrested that day. At least one of his claims is a proven lie.

According to at least one archived newspaper clip, Fred Trump also lived at 175-24 Devonshire Road: A wedding announcement in the January 22, 1936 issue of the Long Island Daily Press, places Fred Trump at that address, and refers to his wife as “Mary MacLeod,” which is Donald Trump’s mother’s maiden name.

Moreover, three additional newspaper clips unearthed by VICE contain separate accounts of Fred Trump’s arrest at the May 1927 KKK rally in Queens, each of which seems to confirm the Times account of the events that day. While the clips don’t confirm whether Fred Trump was actually a member of the Klan, they do suggest that the rally—and the subsequent arrests—did happen, and did involve Donald Trump’s father, contrary to the candidate’s denials.

Roy Cohn, the original Donald Trump, is born in New York

Roy Cohn, the original Donald Trump, is born in New York

On February 20, 1927, Roy Cohn is born to Jewish parents Dora and Judge Albert C. Cohn. He will grow up to be the most blatantly corrupt attorney New York City has ever seen.

And he will mentor Donald Trump.

Roy Cohn was the single greatest influence in Donald’s life, and Roy is incandescent evil… It was enough to make you rush back to church, the Satanic feeling that he would give you… He was a chicken hawk after little boys, and yet he was the most virulently anti-gay guy you could imagine. And so, that was Donald’s mentor and constant sidekick, who represented all five of the organized crime families in the City of New York.

Wayne Barrett, Trump biographer

Less than a year or two after Cohn passes the New York State Bar Exam, he begins working in a U.S. federal prosecutor’s office — a job his father snagged for him, just like Donald Trump.

Cohn and his boss, U.S. Attorney Irving Saypol, star in the national outrage surrounding the prosecution of a husband and wife accused of being communists. Evidence emerges that the couple are innocent, much like the Central Park Five that Trump wrongfully accuses of murder.

Cohn moves up in the world of politics, going on to work as the right-hand man to Senator Joseph McCarthy. Together, they begin purging federal employees based on unsupported claims.

Not before long, Cohn is using taxpayer dollars to take personal trips with a love interest, under the guise of government business. When things start going south for Cohn’s desired relationship, he launches a legal attack on the U.S. Army for getting in his way. But he doesn’t have a case against the military, so he falsifies evidence.

Then, Roy Cohn meets Donald Trump. If you ask Trump, they met in 1973, just in time for Cohn to represent him in a lawsuit by the government. If you asked Roy Cohn while he was still alive, they met around 1969.

See the Roy Cohn archives here to find out what happens next.
