On June 4, Trump ordered White House Counsel David Warrington and Attorney General Pam Bondi to conduct an investigation into former President Joe Biden’s alleged use of an autopen to conceal his cognitive decline.
Trump cited Biden’s poor debate performance during the 2024 Presidential election as evidence that Biden’s cognitive health had deteriorated. However, Trump himself admitted “that he had not uncovered any evidence that the documents were signed without Biden’s approval…”
In a rare move, Biden himself has rebuked accusations of being mentally unfit to carry out the duties of the Presidency.
Without evidence, Trump said that the vast majority of Biden’s executive decisions were signed with an autopen. Even if this was true, most legal scholars concur that the use of autopen is legitimate. It has been used without question by American presidents for decades. Trump has confessed to using the autopen himself for “only very unimportant papers.” Even supposing the investigation paints a damning picture of Biden’s presidency, the legal implications are minimal.
