On May 13, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under acting director Russell Vought dropped its lawsuit against Walmart and Branch, a fintech company partnered with the former, that was filed on December 23, 2024.
Walmart and Branch allegedly and illegally opened accounts for delivery drivers without their permission, forced the drivers to receive their income through these accounts, collected junk fees from them, and failed to provide them with the “instant access” pay that they promised.
There is no known explanation as to why the case was dropped. Despite Trump campaigning on a pro-working class platform, this is another instance of his administration siding with massive corporations over middle and low-income people.
