On January 12, federal prosecutor Robert McBride was fired by the Department of Justice for refusing to prosecute former Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) director James Comey.
McBride was fired despite only having been hired in the fall, and despite his wealth of experience. He was a federal prosecutor for Kentucky’s Eastern District and in the United States Navy, Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
He was the second highest ranking prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia.
While no official reason for his firing has been given, Trump administration officials have been frustrated over his perceived lack of handling of immigration-related cases. His refusal to prosecute Comey, which was already politicized, suggests that he was fired for political reasons, which is illegal.
