In his first major rally since 2024 election, Donald Trump claimed, without evidence or logical reasoning, that Panama Canal must be “returned” to the United States.
If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question.
He added, again without evidence: “We’re being ripped off by Panama Canal… and we foolishly gave it away.”
In response to Trump’s baseless declarations, Panama president José Raúl Mulino said the Canal would remain in Panamanian hands. “Panamanians may have different views on many issues” Mulino said. “But when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag.”
