According to a Fox News article, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Donald Trump held a “hastily” called meeting at Mar-a-Lago, in which Trump suggested Canada could “become the 51st state” of the United States. The comment, reported by anonymous sources to Greg Wehner and Bret Baier, was apparently spurred by Trump’s threat to levy tariffs on Canada if the country did not acquiesce to demands from the incoming administration.

Yes, this story is as dumb as it sounds. I try to read Fixed Noise articles as close to never as possible, but I took one for the team: In addition to Donald floating the hair-brained idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state, readers were treated to Peabody-winning sentences like this: “Before nibbling on crab cocktail and slurping down oysters, the issues of tariffs, border security and trade deficits were front and center.”
Sure, man. If you’re reminded of that time Trump wanted to buy Greenland from Denmark on a lark, you’re absolutely not alone. You’ll be smart to gird your loins for a lot more dumb just like this in the coming months.
