Trump loyalist indicts former FBI director James Comey

On September 25, former Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Director James Comey was indicted by a federal court in Virginia.

Comey is accused of perjuring himself when testifying to Congress on September 30, 2020, about an information leak that he allegedly authorized. Specifically, he’s accused of lying about having an agent at the FBI act as an anonymous source in a news report.

Trump and others in his administration used the indictment to further the unfounded conspiracy theory that the Russiagate scandal was manufactured by the FBI, but there is nothing about Comey’s indictment that changes the results of that investigation.

Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on social media:

“Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people,” Bondi wrote. “We will follow the facts in this case.”

Trump got his opening to prosecute and persecute Comey when Erik Sieber, the now-former interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia resigned when Trump pressured him to charge Comey. Sieber was replaced by Lindsey Halligan, a Trump loyalist who, in the past, represented him in court. Halligan has never prosecuted a case.

Trump appears to have given the green light for this indictment when he posted on social media that Comey is “guilty as hell.” No solid evidence was provided that Comey did anything illegal.

This comes over two months after the FBI launched a politicized investigation into Comey, as well as former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan.

After the indictment was announced, Trump took to Truth Social to accuse Comey of “crimes against our Nation.”
