Since the election and possibly earlier, Donald Trump has been concocting a plan to make loyalist Kashyap Patel the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. His hopes are dashed by national security adviser Robert O’Brien on December 11.
The idea was to put Kash in as the deputy, which doesn’t require Senate approval, and then to fire Gina the next day, leaving Kash in charge…. Robert O’Brien is the one who deep-sixed it.

Other sources credit multiple White House aides for shutting down Trump’s plan. The effort to stop Trump gained momentum after CIA Chief Gina Haspel threatened to resign upon finding out her job was on the line.
