On August 8, the Justice Department subpoenaed New York Attorney General Letitia James for records relating to her lawsuit against Trump with regard to fraudulent personal business dealings. It is part of a larger investigation looking into James violating Trump’s civil rights.
Investigations into James, a long-standing political opponent of Trump, at least date back to May, with FBI Director Kash Patel revealing that she was under investigation for mortgage fraud. James and her legal team have vehemently denied the allegations.
James’ lawyer has said that accusation was a lie based on a purposeful misreading of documents in a lawful real estate transaction.

It just so happened that Senator Adam Schiff, another prominent opponent of Trump, was also placed under investigation for mortgage fraud. Trump and his Justice Department are doing precisely what they accused former President Joe Biden and his Justice Department of committing: the weaponization of law enforcement.
Without evidence, Trump and his allies have accused James of engaging in politically motivated “lawfare” against him. This is despite the fact that James successfully proved in court that Trump “defrauded banks and other lenders by giving them financial statements that inflated the value of his properties, including his golf clubs and his penthouse in Trump Tower.”
The Justice Department is also coming to the rescue of former National Rifle Association (NRA) head Wayne LaPierre, who was prosecuted by James for effectively stealing NRA money to maintain a lavish lifestyle. Records relating to that case were also subpoenaed.
