With the election over, Donald Trump is free from any constraints of lying about the Heritage Foundation/Project 2025‘s integral role in powering his “movement.” To that end, Trump proclaimed on Truth Social that Project 2025 author and former acting director of ICE, Tom Homan, would be named “border czar,” a new cabinet-level post.
As Raheem Hosseini and Ko Lyn Cheang write in the San Francisco Chronicle, creating a position that could facilitate mass deportations was part of Project 2025’s playbook.
The 900-page manifesto expands on Trump’s promise to expel millions of undocumented immigrants by detailing how such a massive undertaking could be accomplished through executive and congressional action.
Trump attempted to install Homan for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director in 2017, but his nomination was stalled in a Democratic-controlled Senate. Now that control of the chamber will flip to Republicans in January, he will likely be confirmed.
Homan, interviewed by 60 Minutes, outlined his plans to destroy families and deport children of immigrants born in America.
Author Commentary
News media’s breathless takes throughout 2024, repeatedly claiming (falsely of course) Trump was “distancing himself” from Project 2025, are now coming home to roost. In the months prior to the 2024 election, we at TrumpFile repeatedly noted the absurdity of claims Trump had “no connection to” Project 2025. For example:
- Karoline Leavitt’s “Project 2025 has nothing to do with our campaign“
- Leaked videos featured a parade of Trump operatives
- JD Vance writing introduction to Kevin Roberts’ book; or
- Heritage had Executive Orders prewritten for Trump to sign
Even state parties did an outsized amount of lying about Trump’s connections to Project 2025, particularly in Georgia. When folks try to sound alarms about impending fascist rule, believe them the first time.
