In a new Truth Social post, Donald Trump has seemingly declared war on Chicago. The post features an AI-generated image of Trump crouching in front of the city, with numerous helicopters in the sky and the phrase “Chipocalypse Now” in the bottom left corner, referencing the 1979 film Apocalypse Now. Above the image is text reading “I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” in reference to the administration’s rebrand of the Department of Defense the day prior.
Trump attempted to downplay the threat the next day, telling a reporter outside the White House that “We’re not going to war, we’re going to clean up our cities. We’re going to clean them up so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war. That’s common sense.” Trump was also visibly upset with the reporter when she questioned the Department of War‘s involvement.
In another Truth Social post earlier in the week, Trump said “Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far. Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast.”
Trump’s threats against Chicago are reminiscent of those made against other cities with Democrat mayors, such as Baltimore and New Orleans, as well as his deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents in Washington DC.
