On August 18, Trump interrupted talks with allied European leaders to have a phone call with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
The talks included the leaders of the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and embattled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Although Trump called Putin to apparently update him on the course of the allied summit and the positions adopted, what the two specifically discussed is unknown. This is far from the first time in which Trump and Putin held talks in which the details remained obscure in their aftermath. For instance, in the 2018 Helsinki summit, Trump was not accompanied by other American officials while talking to Putin. This is very unusual for an American President.
