Donald Trump told reporters that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is “looking at” the United States Postal Service and that we should expect “a kind of merger.” Lutnick was confirmed to the position just two days ago and was sworn in today.
The announcement comes as Trump is reportedly planning to dissolve the USPS Board of Governors, giving his administration more control over the agency.
Six sources confirmed this plan to The Washington Post and revealed that the USPS board held an emergency meeting to sue the White House if/when an executive order comes out.
Trump made a similar move in his first term, giving Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin a directive to replace the Board of Governors. Merging the independent agency with the Dept. of Commerce goes far beyond that.
Critics warn that Trump’s plan would violate the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, which protects USPS as a nonpartisan, independent agency.
