A former Alligator Alcatraz security guard has blown the whistle on the inhumane and gruesome conditions at Florida’s concentration camp.
The guard, only going by Lindsey for safety reasons, claimed that detainees “have no sunlight…no clock in there…they don’t even know what time of day it is.” Lindsey stated that detainees rarely shower and if they do, it’s every four days.
According to the guard, each tent at the facility holds 8 large cages, which she described as “oversized kennels.” Each cage can hold 35-38 inmates, with a total of 200 detainees per tent.
Lindsey explained that the bathrooms are always backed up and the tents inundated with water even during slight rain showers; neither the inmates nor the workers have access to warm water. According to the former guard, the conditions are miserable.
Lindsey confirmed “not everybody there is a criminal.”
Later the same week, on August 7th, a leaked phone call between an Alligator Alcatraz detainee and his girlfriend detailed abuse, sexual harassment, and torture at the concentration camp in Florida.
The detainee, a man of Cuban nationality, explained to his girlfriend that the guards at the camp are inexperienced, abusive, racist, and power hungry. According to the detainee, guards violently assault prisoners, step on their heads, drag and beat them, and grope their intimate areas.
They abuse us in everyway – with the food, in the bathroom, everything, everything! – Alligator alcatraz detainee
The man pleaded with his loved one to share the phone call with a reporter claiming “they will start killing us soon if the news doesn’t get out.” The man also claimed that the guards are “violating all our rights,” and explained that they are not being treated like detainees, rather prisoners and beasts. In one instance, the man explained that guards left a young unconscious man’s body on the floor as they had no safety or emergency training; the detainee explained he does not know whether the man is alive or not.
