On April 7, Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, who served as a representative of the United States to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Military Committee, was abruptly fired.
It is unknown if the firing originated from the White House or Pentagon. While the latter would be consistent with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s misogynistic rooting out of all women military leaders, there is no evidence or confirmation that it was his doing.
Chatfield was the target of right-wing advocacy groups, who, without evidence, claimed that she was obsessed diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The removal of Chatfield has led to European concerns over America’s security commitment to the continent. She will be replaced on an acting basis by Brigadier General Sean Flynn (no relation to disgraced criminal Michael Flynn).
