In a morning interview with Fox News, Trump “border czar” Tom Homan revealed that he recently asked the Justice Department to define informing immigrants of their legal rights as impeding law enforcement, i.e. obstruction of justice.
The statement was made while discussing “Know Your Rights” efforts by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers and officials.
I’ve asked the DOJ, where’s that line of impediment, of interference? If someone stands in your way, prevents you from arresting somebody, puts your hands on them, that’s impediment. But what line is telling people to hide from ICE, not open the door? Where do you cross that line on impediment? So I simply asked the Department of Justice, give us that line.

Knowing your legal rights is not a crime, regardless of your citizenship or immigration status. Informing others of their legal rights is not a crime. Let’s hope it stays that way.
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office recently published an online page explaining your rights if approached by or detained by an immigration officer. We encourage all readers to review their rights here: https://www.atg.wa.gov/know-your-rights-civil-immigration-enforcement-washington
