Sidney Powell, now infamously associated with the slogan “release the Kraken,” admits in court filings that there never was any evidence for the GOP’s Dominion election fraud conspiracy (and no Kraken to release).
Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuit against Powell in January. Today, she argues that the case should be dropped because no one really believed her claims.
Powell’s conspiracy was broadcast on national television. It was supported by Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley–the list of Republicans who backed her claims is longer than the list of Republicans who didn’t. The conspiracy even inspired Saturday Night Live sketches. “Dominion” is probably the most significant reason that 65 percent of Republicans believe Donald Trump won the 2020 election.
But if you believed her, Powell’s lawyers say, then you’re the problem.
No reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.
