On July 29, the Senate voted to confirm Emil Bove as a judge for the 3rd United States Circuit Court of Appeals, which is a lifetime appointment.
Only Republicans, with the exceptions of Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, voted for Bove, who was at one point Trump’s personal lawyer.
Bove was confirmed despite a Justice Department whistleblower, Erez Reuveni, alleging that Bove demanded subordinates to break the law by ignoring court orders that stymied Trump’s deportation scheme. This claim was buttressed by a second whistleblower.
A third whistleblower provided evidence that Bove perjured himself in the Senate, which is illegal, when discussing his handling of the dismissal of charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The specific details of Bove’s connection to the dismissal of Adam’s charges are currently unknown, and the identity of the third whistleblower is unknown. However, what is known is that, while Bove was Deputy Attorney General, the Justice Department saw several prosecutors resign their posts as they refused to bend the law to cement Trump’s political alliance with Adams.
Bove’s questionable acceptance to a position of such vital importance drew a rare rebuke from the Rupert Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal, which warned about Bove’s weaponization of the law and overt partisanship.
