The Kremlin says that Russia will not recognize a winner of the U.S. presidential election until there’s an outcome from Donald Trump’s legal challenges.
Russia is one of only a handful of major countries who have yet to report that Joe Biden is president-elect or to congratulate him on his apparent win.
Asked why in 2016 Putin had congratulated Trump soon after he had won the Electoral College and beaten Democrat Hillary Clinton, Peskov said there was an obvious difference this time round.
“You can see that there are certain legal procedures that have been announced by the current president. That is why the situations are different and we therefore think it appropriate to wait for an official announcement,” said [Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry] Peskov.
