Punishing Colorado, Trump moves Space Command HQ to Alabama

On September 2, Trump announced that he made the decision to relocate the United States Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama.

Colorado’s entire congressional delegation criticized the move.

“Moving Space Command sets our space defense apparatus back years, wastes billions of taxpayer dollars, and hands the advantage to the converging threats of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.” Four of Colorado’s representatives are Republicans.

Clearly, the move was done to punish Colorado, which voted against him in all three of Trump’s Presidential bids, while rewarding Alabama, which supported him in all three attempts to become President. When explaining his decision, Trump stated that he did not “think” that Alabama’s political support for him justified the transfer. However, giving away his political intentions, Trump ranted about Colorado’s voting laws, which permit mail-in voting.

“The problem I have with Colorado, one of the big problems, they do mail-in voting. They went to all mail-in voting, so they have automatically crooked elections,” Trump said. Citizens can vote in person or by mail in Colorado.

Moving the base could cost hundreds of millions of dollars while taking three to four years to complete. 1,700 personnel who work at Space Command will have to relocate as well. The civilian sectors that benefit from the current location of Space Command will naturally lose out from Trump’s move.

As recently as April 2025, the Pentagon inspector general warned of “risks to readiness” if the base is moved. The inspector general acknowledged that moving the headquarters to Huntsville, Alabama could provide a $426 million cost advantage compared to its current location in Colorado (even then, it will take years to fully enjoy the benefits of this cost advantage due to the previously noted costs of transferring the location).
