Michigan’s Republican Party and the Republican National Committee ask to delay the state’s election certification process. The day before, Michigan legislators met with Donald Trump at the White House and partied at Trump International Hotel.
The delay is requested so that votes in Wayne County can be audited. Rudy Giuliani stated on Thursday that Trump can win Michigan if the state ignores Wayne County’s ballots. Later that day, Trump asked Wayne County’s board of canvassers to undo the county’s vote certification. They tried but did not have the authority to do so.
But auditing the votes before certification is against state law.
The letter urged a “full, transparent audit” in Wayne county, citing “numerical anomalies and credible reports of procedural irregularities” made by a losing Republican candidate for the Senate.
Asked about the letter on Saturday, Michigan Department of State spokesman Jake Rollow said Michigan law does not permit audits ahead of the certification of election results.
“Audits play a different role in Michigan elections – to examine and identify errors for future improvement,” Rollow said in a written statement, adding no evidence of widespread misconduct or fraud had been reported.

After meeting with Trump, Republican lawmakers insisted that the meeting was focused on COVID-19 and not the election. Clearly, that was not the case.
