Here’s Kristi Noem, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, rewriting the U.S. Constitution right before our eyes this morning.
Habeas corpus is NOT the constitutional right for a president to deport people. There’s no such thing.
Habeas corpus is the right to due process. It is the foundation of a legal system that upholds that every person is innocent until proven guilty. Without it, the Trump administration — DHS, KRISTI NOEM’S AGENCY — could kidnap and imprison anyone without a moment’s hesitation. (Speaking of which, Mahmoud Khalil has been a prisoner of the United States for 72 days.)
Apparently, the Trump administration is losing patience with the courts fighting back against their violations of our constitution — so they’re rewriting it in front of Congress and on national television.
Donald Trump has been flirting with the idea of deporting United States citizens for nearly two months, and the recent conversations around due process are part of that strategy.
Kristi Noem might be a dog killer, but she isn’t dumb. She knows the constitution doesn’t give Trump the right to deport anyone he chooses, just as much as she knows that DHS doesn’t stand for Department of Hound Shooters.
The Trump GOP has to lie about habeas corpus because if their supporters really understood which of their rights were being stripped away, they wouldn’t have supporters any more.
Trump’s DHS has a long history of attempting to cover up the truth and rewrite reality.
Five years ago this month, Trump’s cronies at the Dept. of Homeland Security forced employees to rewrite reports to downplay the threat of white nationalists — the #1 threat to Americans’ safety in 2020 — and fabricate dangers posed by human rights activists.
How do we remember that happening? We don’t. But the information is readily available. It’s as easy as searching this website for DHS.
