Hegseth memo: military chaplains must replace rank insignia with religious

The Trump Timeline:

On March 24, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued an edict that stated that “a chaplain is a chaplain first and an officer second.” Military chaplains are to no longer display their rank insignia on any military uniform, and will only display religious insignia.

Without evidence, Hegseth justified the move by stating that 80% of the military is religious. Hegseth has sought to emphasize religious duties over therapy and counsel, and conventional religions over spirituality. Also without elaboration, he stated that the Chaplain Corps focused excessively on secular humanism.

This move may harm the professionalism of the military. While the chaplain within it are authorities on their religion, they enjoy no more or less authority than any other soldier, depending on their rank, which they will keep despite rank insignia no longer being displayed. Without this respect for hierarchy within the military structure, professionalism may decrease. The claim that “a chaplain is a chaplain first,” is also questionable, as military chaplains take an oath to defend the United States and the Constitution; their primary allegiance is to American democracy, not their religion.

The removal of rank insignia is yet another attack upon the secular nature of the armed forces.
