FBI searches home of Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan

The Trump Timeline:

Sources linked at end of page.

In an early morning, court-ordered action, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) searched the New York home of Polymarket CEO and founder Shayne Coplan. Polymarket gained notoriety in 2024 as a betting-markets site where gamblers can wager (often using cryptocurrency) on the outcome of global events, most notably U.S. presidential elections.

The company itself operates under a consent decree since 2022, when the federal Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) accused Polymarket of offering unregulated “derivatives” trading (a key factor in 2008’s Great Recession). Since then, no American citizens have been allowed to place bets—although speculation is rampant that Polymarket did, in fact, allow bets from U.S. nationals on the 2024-election outcome.

As Reuters’ Chris Prentice reports:

In the runup to the election, Polymarket said it does not allow Americans to make U.S. election bets on the exchange, and that it certifies all of its large traders to ensure they are not logging in via VPNs to obscure which country they are in. Americans have faced steep restrictions on betting on U.S. elections online. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has previously rejected applications to offer contracts or derivatives that allow Americans to bet on elections.

Details of any ongoing investigation are scarce, Reuters added, but in some cases—like with the criminal document-retention probe of Donald Trump at MarALago or Paul Manafort—FBI searches can be predictive of later indictments.

AUTHOR COMMENTARY

First of all, don’t get it twisted: numerous media outlets called this lawfully executed search of Coplan’s home “a raid,” having learned absolutely nothing from Trump and associates’ false claim that Feds “raided” his property in Florida. They did nothing of the sort: “Raid” is a dramatic, clickbait-y term media uses to capture eyeballs, but it’s not the truth. In writing this post, I was tempted to use more-inflammatory “raid” language but, because I care about accuracy, “search” was the choice.

Polymarket, in very real ways, stepped in front of (already corrupted, in certain respects) political-polling operations, which is problematic for a number of reasons. Presidential elections in the age of social media are subject to false-perception shifts, where information-warfare campaigns can impact outcomes: Elon Musk, for example, pushed Polymarket relentlessly and even voiced support for its indicted CEO.

If betting markets can be so easily corrupted to favor one candidate over another (promoted by high-profile media figures, no less) one wonders what other shenanigans were happening behind the scenes to skew “odds” in their favor.
