Sometime in May, Donald Trump tells Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “go after Bitcoin,” according to then-national security adviser John Bolton.

Trump’s order comes during discussions about how to hurt China financially. He’s been led to believe that clamping down on the trading and selling of internet currency might help.

This conversation is revealed in Bolton’s 2020 book, The Room Where It Happened.

Following the 2020 election, the Trump administration unleashes several unexpected regulations against cryptocurrency in what some call a push for “financial surveillance.”
